Large quantities of clams (Venus mercenaria L.) from the U.S.A. have been introduced in Brittany since 1930. Stopped in 1940, their importation started again in 1954. These shellfishes, designed to be immediately sold for eating, only stayed for a short period of time in the ponds and farms of the Belon, Pénerf and Etel rivers, or in the Gulf of Morbihan, where they were stocked. However, some individuals managed to escape the fisheries and stayed buried for years where they had been sown. Lambert (1949) reported how some twenty year-old clams were found on a farm on the Etel River. In some ponds of the Gulf of Morbihan and the Pénerf river, one can still find clams which have been stocked there before 1940: their size is huge and reaches 10 to 14 cm, and... |

Before 1960 the normal level of mortality of oysters maintained in beds in the Belon river during the summer was in the region of 15%. During several years in the period 1960-1970 much higher mortalities, up to 70% of the stock, were experienced. The circumstances of these mortalities and the appearance of the oysters themselves indicated that no parasitic disease or physiological deficiency was involved. 2 possible caused for the mortalities have been suggested, pollution or a sudden change in the physico-chemical environment. Although some industrial pollution of the River Belon occurs, This is very slight and the oyster beds most affected have been the ones furthest from the source of pollution. Similarly, the River Aven, which has a common mouth with... |

In the summer of 1967, an abnormally high mortality rate struck the Portuguese oysters, Crassostrea angulata, of the Marennes and Arcachon sites and, less severely, those of the other farming sectors of the French Atlantic coast. Yet the examinations performed in the preceding months had brought to light the existence of rather deep lesions on the gills and sometimes on the labial palpi of a large number of the species' oysters that were not harbouring any pinnotheres. The successive appearance of the two phenomena led us to attribute the observed mortalities to what we have called, for convenience, "gill disease". The various specialised laboratories of the Institute of Fishing strove to determine the nature of the infection, its distribution in France... |

To sum up, the Gironde River estuary, the main Portuguese oyster production area, is visited each year by a large number of boats which come for a few days to dredge its natural deposits. The gradual increase of their number and of the efficiency of the fishing gear, as well as the fluctuating fishing performance show the need to define the basis of a rational exploitation in order to protect these oyster banks. Based on the data collected from 1956 to 1958 we set up a work schedule for the visitation commission which should meet at the end of winter, and we put figures on the assessment basis that should help this commission to determine the duration and intensity of each year's exploitation. |

Natural beds of Ostrea edulis, long since decimated, began to repopulate the rivers of the Morbihan "département" in 1943. In 1955, I reported results acquired during the 1943-1954 period and highlighted the effects the repopulation seemed to have on oyster spat collection. It is thus useful to explore to what extent the population has grown and the influence that the renewed population success has had on the European flat oyster in bays and rivers. |

From the studies conducted in 1968 and 1969, it becomes clear that there was a relationship between the flat oyster mortalities that occurred during the summer in the Belon and Merrien rivers and the appearance of a hydrological phenomenon primarily characterised by an overhang of abnormally cold water. Because the events recorded in July 1970 confirm the data already acquired, we will summarise the observations made on that occasion by MARIN, PAULMIER OR GRAS. |
